MODELING & ANIMATION IN CINEMEA4D

The Challenge Series is an annual event, this year the team wanted to refresh the look and feel of the tournament from the previous year. We explored several creative territories and landed on one centered around a jumbotron. It's iconic in sports and has screen space for different messages.

Cinema4D: I used C4D to build the jumbotron, I modeled it off the one in the Buffalo Sabre's arena. Once it was constructed, textured and lit I moved in the animation phase.

Flash: The final application of this was to be a flash banner for the playstation.com homepage masthead. They have animated banners and this was to be featured in one of the slots. The challenge to have visually engaging animation but keep it under 400kb. I was able to balance file size with animation to find a pleasing middle ground that still looks great.

3D MODELING

3D asset creation to support the requirement to be able to visualize body types.

Using DAZ Studio I was able to create the male figure and apply morphs to show toned, built, overweight and natural body types. I then moved the models to Cinema3D for lighting and rendering.

When embarking on this task we discovered many detailed male body 3d models to leverage but the challenge was we needed the models to be consistent from a visual point of view. More so, we envisioned a way to animate in realtime the changes to the body in the app. This is what led us to consider using DAZ Studio. This allowed us to have limitless morphs all on a consistent looking male model and animate these body morph from keyframe to keyframe. The rendering exercise was to get photorealistic quality. Setting up the model in a studio lighting environment was the best way to achieve. When we considered texturing we landed on using a clean, ceramic-like material.
